Social Emotional Learning
Jamestown Schools align social emotional learning (SEL) with the Rhode Island Social Emotional Learning Standards. The RI SEL standards were endorsed by the RI Department of Education in October 2017. RI schools are encouraged to follow these standards and implement them in classrooms at all levels, for all students. SEL connects to all instruction and supports academic rigor and SEL skills are important for ALL!

- Provides small group and individual counseling supports to students who demonstrate a need in school with social/emotional needs
- Provides resources and supports to parents as needed

- Provides small group and individual counseling supports to students who demonstrate a need with social/emotional needs
- Consults with educators and support staff regarding behavior planning for students in need of behavior supports and interventions

Lawn Guidance Counselor
(Monday, Thursday, Friday)
- The primary role of the guidance counselor is to support students in the areas of academic achievement, career exploration and personal and social development
- Guide the students through the Individual Learning Plan process which is a student-directed planning and monitoring toll that customizes learning opportunities.
- The ILP documents students’ interests, needs, supports, course selections (including access to college level programming), transition placements and other learning experiences both in and out of school.
- Students may see the counselor for academic support with availability to support additional areas such as; goal setting, study skills, conflict management

Lawn Student Assistance Counselor
(Tuesday & Thursday)
- The Student Assistance Counselor (SAC) role is a collaboration between Lawn School and RISAS
- RISAS (Rhode Island Student Assistance Services) is a statewide alcohol and drug abuse prevention and early intervention program in both middle and high schools
- The goals include:
- Prevent (or delay) use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs
- Enhance the resiliency of adolescents whose parents are substance abusers
- Promote a sense of connectedness in the community
- Our goal, in providing prevention education in the SEL framework for the students is to help alleviate stress and anxiety, and highlight healthy coping strategies so students do not use substances to self-medicate
- The SAC is available if you have a concern about your child and substance use, or substance use in the family
